10th Street Lifeguard Tower on South Beach

Not your ordinary lifeguard tower. Several of these colorful towers sprinkle the sands of South Beach, Florida.

After Hurricane Andrew, architect William Lane donated his design services to the city and created most the of lifeguard towers. The towers instantly became symbols of a revived Miami Beach. After renovating The Tides hotel, Ilija Mosscrop was commissioned to design the 10th Street “Bed” tower by Chris Blackwell, The Tides owner. Mosscrop collaborated with his father, Stuart, on the tower design. Two towers were the result of artistic competitions. Veteran lifeguard Hank Oppenborn of Ocean Rescue designed two more towers. Of course, lifeguards consider the Oppenborn towers the most ideal to work in.

On vacation, I captured this picture of the 10th Street Lifeguard Tower on South Beach. The colorful and elaborate lifeguard tower intrigued me, so I took a quick snap with my iPhone. Despite my love of the iPhone camera, the quality of it’s images surprise me. If I’d known the history behind the Miami Beach lifeguard towers, I would have went on a documentary mission.
